Spinning my wheels.
10.19.06 (3:17 pm)   [edit]
I’ve been working a lot so I won’t get to post until Saturday or Sunday… in the meantime I want to relay this little story in honor of Lady G’s post about blessings.

As many of you know, my Honda was repossessed last Christmas. I was buried by bills and in way over my head just trying to survive, because I stayed home to take care of Ali—almost inevitably with cancer one parent has to stay home because of all of the hospital stays, etc…plus, I’d rather be without money and a car than have lost one second with her.

Yes…I’m over-compensating with the explanation because it is quite humiliating to have the Repo man show up. Although we did have a nice chit-chat as he was explaining to me the process and I did remember to thank him as I handed him my keys.

So, I have been without a car for almost a year. Because my new venture has been picking up steam, I decided to go look for a used (very used) car. I haven’t been too excited because I hate the thought of getting something that’s going to cost me a bundle in repairs, plus, insurance in Michigan is very expensive…and my little business is still in the fledgling stage. I often swim in the river of denial.

I was getting ready to quote a job and I got a call from my mom. She said, Grandma is not able to drive anymore and wants to give you her car. Now, I hadn’t told anyone I was looking for a car—and I about fell off of my chair. I was speechless and told her that I would be happy to pay her and she said no, she just wants you to have it!

I called grandma and she was just so sweet about it…would not take any money and
I must tell you that no one has ever been happier to have an old Red Taurus…with a mere 60,000 miles on it. I was thanking God and Grandma…all day long and then some.

So, what do you think? Fur seat cushions, fuzzy dice, a new speaker system and a horn that plays the theme from the Sopranos?

I'll buy the fuzzy dice.....now really the car doesn't look that bad....it's shiney and not rusty like some east side cars....so you will look quite grand in it...... Grandma turned in her drivers license today.....and you do deserve a blessing...... Love U

I have to agree with your Mom on this one, I can't think of anyone who deserves a blessing like this one more! Enjoy the new ride.

Sounds to me like your grandma is a crazy lady! Fuzzy dice? Wow... didn't know they had those any more. Or is that your doing? I'm assuming you chose the horn's music.

Poor grams...I hate it that she has to turn in her license. I could care less what it looks like... it will get me around and it is free... I'm a happy girl. Looks like I'll see you Monday when I come to pick it up. Love you.

I think I'm going to definitely send her something...gift certificate or something...she's out of state and will be gone visiting when I pick up the car. Very thoughtful suggestion... thank you. As far as the other things I'll put them on my wish list. :)

I know! How awesome is that? I am reminded of how in the 'old days' I used to listen to people on the radio who won these contests and they'd get $500 and be screaming and ecstatic and I'd wonder, why are they getting all worked up over $500 lousy dollars. well, that's me over a used Taurus. I just keep thinking how lucky is that. I like myself better after struggling that I did in the 'old days'. I'm glad I've had the experience of looking at life through both views. Thank you for your enthusiasm for my circumstance.

Doe, I've always heard that it is never wise to finance the purchase of the family pet...for just that reason. How sad he must have looked as the truck was driving away. :) Ok...so that made me absolutely laugh out loud. It's a humiliating experience to be sure (the car). Thank you for your good wishes...I already feel like things are turning around--but, I don't want to say it out loud...just in case. :) Thanks for the laugh.

Grandma does rock. She is a fiercely independent woman... so I know this is hard for her to give up the keys. So, I appreciate the car even more knowing the sacrifice behind it. Thanks Bawdy.

I'm sure you are taking college by storm...they're probably still wondering what hit them. :) I may stop in Goshen and see Megan Tuesday evening...perhaps I'll run into you at the brew. Hope you settle down and enjoy the weekend. Thanks for your comment girly.

No...I'm the nutty one. Grandma is perfectly sane. Those were merely some options that I was considering. Although I did find out that she has the automatic remote starter so I can warm the car up on these cold Michigan mornings...
Do you remember when you got your first car and the first thing you did was go and get a stereo system for it--didn't everyone do that back then? That's because the music was a notch above anything before or since... Bob Seger, Kansas, Aerosmith, Zepplin, Boston...going off track...sorry. Forgot to ask her about the stereo...but, I'll find out on Monday. :)

What a stroke of good luck, lori! :-) I'm so glad you are able to get this car! P.S. I just might have a pair of fuzzy dice if you can brush off a little dust LOL :-) Good for you!

Lori...God was listening to your prayers and apparently thought you deserved a positive answer.
Now about those fuzzy dice...

I know a thing or two about securing beat-up old cars. Senior citizens with dusty old cars are a great source for a good deal. That is, if you can get them to let go of the vehicle. Some keep the car, sitting idle in the garage, for many years just hoping they will be able to drive again. And I understand. Your grandmother was kind and clear-thinking to pass her vehicle on to someone who can use it. God bless her.

Oh, and I recommend getting tires, belts, and hoses checked. If a car sits up, unused, such items go bad rather quickly.
